Sometimes I sit in my studio, looking at a blank canvas, and wonder if what I have to say matters. But this feeling isn’t unique to artists – I think we all have moments where we question whether our voice, our ideas, our unique way of seeing things really makes a difference.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand: we’re not actually trying to speak to the entire world – that feels overwhelming and impossible. Instead, we’re reaching out to our own small circle of people who might need to hear what we have to offer. Maybe it’s just one person who connects with your perspective, your solution, or your way of doing things. That’s enough.
Whether you’re a teacher finding new ways to reach your students, a parent sharing wisdom with your children, a business owner solving problems in your community, or someone who simply has a kind word at just the right moment – we all have our own form of creativity. We all have light to share.
I believe we’re here to express ourselves and to bring something meaningful to others, no matter what we do for work or how we spend our days. When we hold back our voice – whether it’s through our art, our ideas, our kindness, or our unique approach to life – we’re keeping something beautiful from reaching someone who might really need it.
Right now, I’m working on a large 48×48 inch piece that feels like it’s teaching me about this very thing. It shows a woman walking along the shoreline, and the ocean around her is dark and turbulent with waves that feel heavy and unsettling. But as she moves forward, magical blooms appear in her wake – as if her presence alone is bringing color and life to the shadowy waters.
This painting reminds me that sometimes sharing our gifts feels like walking into cold, uncertain waters. We don’t know how our contribution will be received. But when we move forward anyway, we often discover that our unique way of being brings unexpected beauty into spaces that felt dark before.
Your voice doesn’t have to change the world. It just needs to be yours, and it needs to be shared. Someone out there is waiting to connect with exactly what you have to offer.
