This is a painting about what it takes to call a place home. She has arrived somewhere dry and vast, and she is still holding the softness of somewhere else around her shoulders. The desert took its time with her. She took her time with it.

A poem in my own handwriting is collaged into the canvas. Most of it disappears beneath layers of ink, acrylic, and oil, but a few words surface through the fabric of the blanket if you look closely. Clear acrylic gel adds texture across the blooms, so the surface shifts as the light moves through the room.

I felt the pull of the West for a long while, and answered its call at last.
The city and I had nothing in common – the neon was never my language.
But the golden sun warmed my unsettled soul,
and the clear blue sky was honest, with nothing to hide.
And the mountains – the mountains and canyons cast their spell.
I touched them. I felt their eternal calm.
I came wrapped in my own thoughts, holding on to the past.
The red rock took its time with me, and I took my time with it.
And in the end, the rock opened, and sang its song, and told its story.
I saw deep inside its soul.
And this is what I carried. This is where I stayed.
