Wildwood Heart – Original Deer Painting in Oil & Mixed Media on Paper | Contemporary Wildlife Art with Vibrant Colors

There’s something about deer that has always drawn me in. They move through the forest with such grace, such quiet presence. When I think of a peaceful, beautiful woodland, deer are the guardians I see – the gentle keepers of wild spaces.

This piece came from that feeling. I wanted to capture not just the physical beauty of a deer, but the spirit of the wildwood itself – all those vibrant colors and textures you’d find in nature when you really stop and look. The pinks of dawn light, the teals of shadowed moss, the golden warmth filtering through branches.

I layered inks, acrylics, and oils on watercolor paper to build up the texture and depth. I used salt during the process, which creates that organic, sandy texture when brushed away after drying. Each layer was about finding the right balance between softness and strength, between the abstract colors swirling around the deer and its steady, watchful presence.

The painting is sealed with varnish to protect all those beautiful layers.
