Sometimes the most delightful art happens when we’re not trying so hard. These little kitty studies came to life during one of those cozy studio afternoons – gouache paints spread across my table, something inspiring playing softly in the background, and my hands just moving freely.
I wanted to try something completely different from my usual work, and these whimsical little creatures with their bright turquoise fur and playful expressions were the result. Each one has its own personality, surrounded by flowers and organic shapes that seem to dance around them.
Gouache has become my go-to for these experimental moments. It’s so wonderfully forgiving – if something doesn’t feel right, you can simply paint over it. The colors blend beautifully but stay vibrant, and there’s no pressure to create something “finished.”
While this style isn’t something I plan to pursue further, it was such a fun departure from my regular practice. Sometimes it’s good to let our hands wander in new directions, even if it’s just for an afternoon of creative play.
